PS is a low-cost, amorphous thermoplastic available in general-purpose (GPPS, clear and brittle) and high-impact (HIPS, opaque and tough) forms. It has good dimensional stability and electrical insulation. Typical applications include yogurt cups, refrigerator liners, CD cases, toys, and medical labware. Modification is key: HIPS improves impact resistance for printer housings and automotive interior parts. Flame-retardant PS is used for TV housings and electrical appliance casings. Heat-resistant PS grades withstand hot-fill packaging. GPPS is modified with rubber for transparency and toughness. PS can be coextruded with barrier materials. Anti-static PS grades are used for electronics packaging. PS is easily painted and glued for display applications. Recycled PS (rPS) is increasingly used for picture frames and office accessories. PS’s low cost and moldability make it a commodity workhorse.
